Too often, women beat themselves up for the perceived imperfections in their bodies. From size-zero jeans to thigh gaps to porcelain-smooth skin, perfection comes in many unattainable forms. There seems to be no end to the things we find ourselves lacking in. But instead of faulting what we can’t change, some positivity goes a long way in embracing yourself, flaws and all.
Here are some simple ways to let go of your body hang-ups:
Don’t scoff at this one. Positive self-talk is one of the most effective ways to get yourself out of a pity party. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have – if only I had Gisele Bundchen’s fabulous hair! If only I had legs like Miranda Kerr’s! – take note of all the things you have going for you. Turn “I wish I were her” into “I like what I see in the mirror”. Wouldn’t you rather be the best version of yourself than a poor copy of someone else?
We are often our own worst critics. You would hardly say to someone else the things you criticise about yourself. You are so ugly! Look at those flabby arms! And just like you wouldn’t say those things to someone else, cut down the negative self-talk and be a little kinder to yourself.
Instead, identify your best feature and highlight it as much as possible, whether it’s your almond-shaped eyes or button nose. For instance, if you’ve got a full, round face but great peepers, get a face-framing haircut that directs the attention to your eyes while shaving off the edges of your face. Better yet, make the smoky eye your go-to look. Line with kohl eyeliner if you’re feeling particularly dramatic, and go for a nude glossy pout. The key is to play up your favourite feature so as to silence that negative voice in your head.
There is no magic number – be it dress size, our weight or waistline – that we can ever feel content with. Ideally, we would all have skyrocketing metabolism that allows us to eat whatever we want and stay slim. But not only is it impossible to have a fast metabolism all your life – unless you have a condition like hyperthyroidism – there is also no effortless way to lose weight. Don’t get sucked into the numbers game where you end up chasing an unattainable, ever-shifting ideal.
Keeping a diary full of positive notes, mantras, and quotes (“Happy girls are the prettiest”, “I can think of a lot of things that taste better than skinny feels“) will have you banishing that critic in your head the next time it rears its ugly head. Instead of recording fat and caloric content of every morsel of food you consume, write down or make a scrapbook of uplifting messages that you can revisit every time you need a self-esteem boost.
Life’s too short to deny yourself a little pleasure from time to time. Besides, completely cutting out your favourite foods will only backfire as you end up craving it even more. And when you finally succumb to temptation, you’ll tend to overcompensate and reach for the jumbo packet of chips instead. Stop obsessing and start living!
